Rubber Band Powered Wooden Car Kit
is a simple assemble yourself wooden vehicle which can be wound up and powered by a rubber band. This craft kit comes with all the pieces you need to make a race car in the style of a dragster. The big back wheels have rubber inserts so when you let the car go the wheels will have traction and the car shoot forward. This set can be pushed together and will work without glue but for maximum strength a few spots of glue are recommended. The idea here is to stretch the rubber band around the back axle and then turn the wheels to tighten it. When you then release the wheels they will spin and the car move.
This is a great science experiment and illustrates many basic principles of physics such as conversion of energy (potential to kinetic). The potential energy of the stretched rubber band released into kinetic energy or movement of the car. The clever design means the rubber band is caught on the drivers head and not flung off never to be seen again. You can of course decorate this car in any way you wish. A great little project and full of learning potential.
