Skipping is quite tricky to learn and there are a few things you can do to help the process along. (really fun too).

Try laying the rope on the floor and then jump over it and jump back trying to land in the same spot on both sides.
Get your child to try and swing the rope from behind them to in front of them smoothly without worrying about jumping.
Jump on the spot landing back in the same spot without falling over.
Jump in time to music or a beat.

Think about all the skills it takes to skip and break them down and practice each step separately. Fantastic skill to learn as it involves hands, feet, legs and arms all coordinating with each other.
